Terry Smith asked about identifying a cover of a clear piece of glass with a Ram’s Head finial. We received lots of responses. Will only reproduce a few and credit those who responded. First, John Styler responded and noted that I still must have not fully recovered from flying 7 time zones. I missed the word “club” in the website, which correctly is www.cardersteubenclub.org.
Marshall Ketchum points out that this isn’t from the Carder Steuben period, but after 1932 when Steuben went all clear crystal with many artists as designers.
Probably the best reference on “modern” post Carder Steuben is Mary Jean Madigan’s book Steuben Glass An American Tradition in Crystal. This cover appears to be the cover for number 7936 “Candy Dish with Ram’s-Head Finial” shown in the drawings on page 343 of the 2003 addition. More research would need to be done to find an actual photo of the piece or, better yet, a piece of the glass to compare it with before a definite attribution could be made. The candy dish was designed by Irene Benton and was released in 1943 so it is definitely not a Carder design.
Others who provided the same identification included Al Bradtke, John Styler, Robert Bjork, Bob Weinberg and Beth Shaut.
In addition Lillian Nassau adds this piece of information.
This was a popular piece that remained in production for many years.
John Styler adds to the discussion with this question.
Alan, is there a web site similar to ours on Modern Steuben Glass, post Carder?
John, I think not. The Carder Steuben site is unique and quite special.
Then, Glenn Williams owns a similar piece and sends a couple of pictures.
