What’s in a name?

The Carder Steuben Club web site has a Guest Sign In Book. Recently, we received a sign in from John Brady of Plymouth, England. John said that he discovered is great great uncle is Frederick Caleb Carder. As you may recall Ed Bush has researched and prepared a scholarly paper, soon to be published in the NAGC quarterly, establishing that Mr. Carder did not used the middle name “Caleb”. Needless to say, Ed was shocked to see a relative of Mr. Carder’s referring to his middle name. As you’ll see from the correspondence below this wasn’t any inside information of Mr. Brady. Ed can now give a sigh of relief. At any rate, our web site is a great repository of Carder information. For the guest entry see www.cardersteubenclub.com At the bottom of the page click on “Guest Book View Entries”.

Subject: Re: Frederick Carder’s Middle Name
Dear Edward,
We have only come across Frederick Carder in our family history search by a stroke of luck leaving us amazed to find we had such a famous person in our family tree.
The only research we have done on him is through the Internet and came across his middle name listed on Wikipedia. Unfortunately we have not had chance to research him any further to try to confirm where the middle name reference in this write up comes from.
We are grateful that you have researched his name back to his birth certificate and have
confirmed his true name and can only apologize if our e-mail has caused your article to be delayed. Any more information you can give i.e copy of the birth certificate, parents marriage certificate etc would be much appreciated.
Best of luck with your article.
Regards,
John.

Dear Mr. Brady,
I just saw your message at the Carder Steuben Collectors Club site today, and was startled to note that you gave Carder the middle name Caleb. I just wrote an article that will be
published shortly that makes the case that Frederick Carder did not have a middle name. I will send you a copy of the article by email. Unfortunately, I am unable to send you the figures that show his signature at various times in his life.
Please let me know at your earliest convenience your source for this middle name. Needless to say, I don’t want to proceed with publication of my article if its conclusion is incorrect. Your assistance will be greatly appreciated.
