Issue 991
November 29, 2010
This past summer the University of Southern Indiana of Evansville, Indiana did an exhibit of about 25 pieces of Carder glass. Susan Colaricci Sauls, Art Collection Registrar at the University prepared labels for the glass. She has recently shared those labels with me. I thought her research as a non-Steuben experienced person was quite superbly done. Likewise, particularly instructive. Susan’s comment on her research is: yes I was the kid in school that liked to do research papers!
So, I will over a period of the next several weeks share these at one or two pieces at a time. Where available I will also share a picture of the piece discussed by a link to the www.CarderSteubenClub.org website.
Jade Green Canoe Centerpiece Bowl
Lead Glass

The Carder Centerpiece bowl was one of the more sizable and weighty pieces created during the Carder years at the Steuben Glass Works. It appeared as Shape # 6515 in the 1932 Steuben Catalog with the option of cut glass decoration.
Technical Note: Each item that was designed and went into production at Steuben was given a sequential Shape Number by Mr. Carder. The first item, Shape #1, was designed in 1903 and the last, Shape # 7749, in 1932. Original designs were drawn on loose paper with pencil and India ink and kept on the factory floor in a binder.
Florentia Centerpiece Bowl
Internally Decorated Bowl with a Cinnamon Jade Five Petal Flower with Silver Mica Flecks and Matte Finish
http://cardersteubenclub.org/shapes/item-view.cfm?recordID=21931&back=1
Our Lender enjoys viewing this shallow bowl from above because ‘it resembles a flower floating with sunlight sparkling on the water’.
Technical Note: Florentia is made from glass particles (in this example Cinnamon/Pink and silver mica fleck) that are fused between layers of clear glass. The outer surface is then sandblasted or etched for a matte finish.
