Update on Construction

Yesterday we saw a picture of the demolition of the Steuben plant in Corning. Today we find out the uses and reconstruction plans.

Someone forwarded this email to me and I just wanted to reach out to you to clarify the note in the email.

The iconic Steuben ventilator in the background is remaining as part of the expansion. The demolition to the left is of a CMoG and Steuben office building and that area will house a new contemporary glass gallery.

As part of the expansion, we are pleased we’ll be able to preserve the Steuben ventilator structure and its iconic shape. It will remain intact, and will host a very well-equipped glassmaking studio for public demonstrations. It honors the spirit of that space. It is important to note that, over the winter, the cladding of the ventilator will be removed (along with the “claw” structure at the very top) for abatement and clean-up, so it will look like we are also taking down that building, but that is definitely not the case.

We are documenting the work and detailing the addition on our website at cmog.org/expansion. I hope you’ll share that web address with the club, and invite them to follow along. It’s an exciting project that will allow visitors to explore glass in new ways.
