Just to illustrate how Carder would change the functions of his designs to accommodate a buyer, the second calcite dome in yesterday’s Gazette in the the illustrated drawings, was also available as an aquarium. I have one that came from his house and I have also seen one in a wrought iron stand. So if we think we are looking at a shade or any other of his designs in which we think we know the use, it is probably best to keep all other options open.

Many years ago my wife & I were members of the Charles Dawes House Museum in Evanston, IL, each year we had a one day sale, thousands of donations. My wife and I were working the furniture and odds n’ ends section.

All day long this black rough iron thing was staring at me and not one person looked at it all day and a half hour before we closed down I turned the darn this up side down and bought it for $5.

It is a aquarium stand and one of the other members said “now if you could find the Steuben aquarium that goes with it”, I never did and don’t expect to.

Believe it or not it’s in the basement up side down.
