Carder’s Inspiration

Friday, Beth Shaut said: “The Strawberry Mansion was built by the first Justice of Philadelphia. The building was restored in the early 1960’s and Carder was asked to design a dinner set from a piece of broken Feudal glass found on the premises.”

Wilson and Susan Craigie asked for a date clarification.

Alan – We had thought the Strawberry Mansion set was designed by Frederick Carder and made by Steuben Glass in the 1931-1934 time frame.

The set was greatly admired and placed into production by Steuben for a number of years to follow. ??

Beth responds and clarifies

To my knowledge Mr. Carder was approched by the committee to design and produce the set for the restoration and reopening of the Strawberry Mansion. Service for 24 was made. Carder designed the engraving with the judicial symbol because of the history of the mansion. It became a desire design and Steuben made it for the public until 1934.

We have a luncheon set, service for 4, here at the shop that came from a couple who purchased it in 1934 as their luncheon set when they married.
