Red Urn Query

Nov 4, 2013
Issue 1853

Friday in Gazette #1852 John Styler expressed his dismay at not having bid enough at the Carder Steuben Symposium on cigarette urn shape #7734. This shape is shown in MJ Madigan’s tome. However, not in the line drawings in Gardner. The design speaks to me as Carder’s design. Gardner’s line drawings show shape #7730, and then next, #7736. What’s all that about? There was a carryover of some Carder designs in the post-Carder period. If this was produced in colors and not merely clear, was this the Carder period or post-Carder?

Rings

Stacy and Al Levinrad, California, MD

Al and I were the lucky winners of the red Cigarette Urn. I love any red glass and most of my collection includes the smallest of a particular collectible. So this piece fits in great with our eclectic collection. We were absolutely thrilled to bring this little gem home with us.

When I looked it over at home, I looked at the handles and wondered if there were ever small rings attached to them. I recall that Debbie and David Schultz mentioned that they were very careful with the rings on their large vases since they are so fragile and subject to breakage. The cigarette urn has a little twist in each handle that looks like the larger vases I’ve seen that have those loose rings.

I see that John’s cigarette holders have the same handles as ours and no rings. Did any of these urns have rings?

Thanks for all your help!
