Myths About Museum Curating

Mistakes in Curating

About 15 or 20 years ago we visited the New Orleans Museum of Art during the course of a National American Glass Club Seminar.

At the time both Jay Doros and I pointed out to the curator that a piece of Oriental Jade was mislabeled as Oriental Poppy. The curator said that they had a receipt from Bob Rockwell saying it was Oriental Poppy, so from their point of view, it was Oriental Poppy. I tried to explain the difference but it was pointless. If someone says a green object is pink does that make it pink?

Most of the Steuben at NOMA is correctly labeled but the descriptions could be more informative. I understand that the staff may not be expert in everything in a collection but this is not the first time that I’ve had a museum reject constructive criticism.

Fast forward 20 years, and the glass is still labeled as Oriental Poppy.

What more can I say?

Alan,

The NOMA has some nice examples of Steuben. Howerver, as with all museums there are misattributions. In this case, there are so many pieces that are misattributed to Steuben that they need a Steuben expert to help them sort it out.

It would appear to me that NOMA could use a little help in there naming certain types of glass as well as some authentication services to cull out a couple of non Steuben pieces. These observations are from the PDF computer pictures.

Wishing a wonderful Christmas and Holiday Season to all.
