STEUBEN ADVERTISING – Part Three
The first two photographs I shared were from a 1953 catalog. This photograph is an Edward Steichen photograph of model Elizabeth Blair taken in the Steuben Glass Shop in 1935. A copy of this photograph was included in a book of a collection of photographs. There is no indication how or for what this photograph was used. All of the glass to the right of Ms. Blair appears to be Modern Steuben (Post Carder Steuben to those of you who prefer that term). However, the two pieces on the counter at the extreme left side of the photograph appear to be Carder Steuben. The pan leaning against the wall seems to be Verre de Soie and the colorless vase just in front and slightly to the right looks like Shape 7289, an example of which can be found in the Shape Gallery. However, the blockbuster in the photograph is the large vase on the pedestal behind and to the left of Ms. Blair. That is Shape 7643, the line drawing for which can be found on page 140 of Gardner (I wonder why he chose to include it in the Baskets section?). The dimensions given for the vase are 30 inches tall, 20.5 inches in diameter at the top, 10.5 inches in diameter at the foot and 13 inches in diameter for the body. I have no idea what the glass is, but more importantly, where did that vase end up?
