Scott has good taste in apples and women.

STEUBEN ADVERTISING – Part Two

I previously shared a photograph from a 1953 Steuben catalog which used a model in the photograph along with the iconic Steuben apple. Here is another photograph from the same catalog using the same model (probably taken the same day given the model’s attire). Again, I was struck by the composition of the photograph. The line from the candlestick in the right front foreground to the candlestick in the left background draws your eye through the bowl causing you to see all of the glass before you even get to the model and the tone she is meant to convey. Note that the flowers are laid horizontally to keep your eye moving and not to compete with the height of the candlesticks. I have always thought that these candlesticks (Shape 7792 designed in 1937) are a derivative design from Carder’s design Shape 7746, an example of which can be seen in the Shape Gallery at the Club’s website. click here to see Carder’s #7746
