John Styler asked for help in identifying this tumbler

One response is from Michael Krumme of Los Angeles

This is way outside my area of specialty, but I happened to notice that an eBay seller is offering some stemware that was similar, which he or she listed as Pairpoint. The auction is item number 370577987386.

I’m not saying that the cut pattern on the seller’s goblets was the same as John’s tumbler, just that they similar in that they are cobalt-cut-to-clear. I’m at work so I don’t have any of my 4 Pairpoint books here with me, but that might be a good place to start looking.

I have also found the Stemware identification book published by Replacements Ltd. another good resource. It doesn’t cover “everything from all eras” but it can be helpful for many 20th Century glass manufacturers.

Next, we hear from Neil Unger of Rolling Meadows, Illinois

Good Day “Steubenites”:

Good news and bad news… The good news,,,Your piece might be Durand or Dorflinger,, they did this case cutting work….The cobalt would be a thin layer cased over crystal cutting the cobalt back to the base crystal……. The bad news,, there is work coming in today from Europe done in this style,,fairly good quality..Generally speaking today’s glass is heavier,,then back in the day…Also back then the cobalt was richer more dense in color,,somewhat like old time syrup which was much thicker than today’s watery syrup..Turn a bottle of today’s syrup upside down and look,,against an old version and see how slow the old syrup rises to the top,, slow is better,,if you get what I mean??

By the way you might want to catch the 20/30/40 Glass show March 10th & 11th Saturday and Sunday at the Concord Plaza,,Midwest Conference Center Northlake Illinois 60164.. There will be over 25 Glass Dealers there, and who knows,, you might find some Steuben lurking around.. Look for us,,we will be set up there too….I’ve attached some photos of last years show…
