Holiday Wishes & Thomas Edison

In 1888 Frederick Carder was designing glass in England at Stevens & Williams. In that year he won the silver medal in a national competition of schools of science and art.
Frederick Carder created this piece in 1929 to honor Edison’s 50th Anniversary of the invention of the light bulb and the opening celebration of the Henry Ford Museum. Guest attending the event received this as a gift.

In Coronado Electric lighting at the del Coronado hotel was a world first. The electric wires were installed inside the gas lines, so if the “new-fangled” electricity didn’t work, they could always pipe gas in to illuminate the rooms. Thomas Edison inspected the final electrical installation, and returned in 1904 to oversee the world’s first electrically-lighted outdoor Christmas tree, which was placed on the hotel’s lawn.

Edison’s invention of the electric light bulb would have an important interplay when Mr. Carder came to the United States and produced many luminors and enormous quantities of lighting shades. One of the best known luminors was the 350 commissioned by Henry Ford for his dear friend, Thomas Alva Edison.

Technical Note: Cast or pressed glass items were created by placing molten glass into a prepared mold. This was considered an economical use of manpower and increased production. Although Steuben produced very few of these works, the molded pieces still required additional handwork and surface finishing.
