Dear Glass Enthusiast,
The Museum of American Glass in West Virginia (MAG in WV) has had a phenomenal year! It
was last January that we began our relocation to a 12,000 square foot building, adding 30 plus cases to our public display area, and more additions in the realm of machinery, moulds, etc. We are nearing 7,000 glass objects on permanent display!
We continue to apply our limited resources to our utilities, payments on our new building,
infrequently on archives, catalogs and items we believe have significant historical value. We spend very, very little on glass. In fact most glass is given us by donors looking for a home for the collection as they downsize or otherwise. However, there are occasions when we find some objects we believe are of importance and may be available only once. Below we quote from the Green Valley Auction site about their January 25,26,27, 2008 auction.
“From the late 1940’s until shortly before his death in 2005, Frank M. Fenton was actively involved in the design of Fenton glass products. In the 1950’s and 1960’s, Frank frequented antique shops and shows, where he purchased many glass, ceramic and metal items for “design inspiration.” When he bought a piece of glass, there was something about it that Frank wanted, be it color, pattern, shape, crimp, decorative treatment or some other element of design. Frank wasn’t interested in “copying,” but he was always intrigued by the possibilities of adapting aspects of others’ designs to Fenton’s production methods… Most of the glassware consigned to Green Valley Auctions, Inc. by the Fenton Art Glass Co. was purchased by Frank between 1950 and the early 1970’s; many pieces will bear six-digit inventory numbers used by Fenton to keep track of Frank’s purchases.”
MAGinWV now wishes to acquire some of these design examples for our collection. We think the
teaching opportunity to place the actual piece on which later Fenton variations were made is exceptional and a rare opportunity.
To this end the MAG Board has approved a rare allocation of $1,000 from our sales of imprints on e-bay toward this auction. At present three individuals have stepped forward and pledged $100-$113 each ($113 is $100 plus the buyers commission) toward this one time event and opportunity. We thus currently have $1,326 for this cause.
We are writing this note, which we encourage you to send on to others if you wish, to raise funds for this event. If you can support this project pledges or checks should go to WVMAG as soon as possible. The contact at the museum is Sharon at 304.269.5006 or email at glassmuse1@verizon.net to discuss options or ask questions. Of course we would welcome you to join us at Green Valley and help make the tough decision on bidding!
We appreciate your support and consideration.
