It is with great sadness that we share the news that Tom Dimitroff passed away this morning.

Tom held a special place in the history of the Carder Steuben Glass Association. He was the founder and president of the Friends of Carder, the organization that preceded our Association, and his enthusiasm and dedication helped lay the foundation for the organization we know today.

Tom’s interests extended well beyond his love of Carder Steuben glass. He was a teacher, local historian, author, and dedicated glass collector. He wrote several books about Corning and its history, including History of the Corning-Painted Post area: 200 years in Painted Post Country and The Houghtons of Corning, New York: Five Generations of Brilliance. Of course, fans of Steuben glass are acquainted with his authorship of Frederick Carder and Steuben Glass, which has long been an important reference for collectors and those interested in Carder’s work.

Those who knew Tom will also remember the person behind all that knowledge, a man who was always ready with a story or a joke and who generously shared his enthusiasm with others.

Tom made a lasting contribution to our Association and to the appreciation and understanding of Carder Steuben glass. He will be greatly missed by his many friends and fellow collectors.
