Issue 3785
As I explore the boxes of reference material given to our organization by Tom Dimitroff, I am fascinated by the wide range of documents he collected. For this Gazette, I have selected copies of colored drawings of Cintra glass. The collection is annotated “Steuben Archives, Box 68, Rakow Library.”
These drawings reveal a wealth of information upon close inspection. They include line drawing numbers, various color combinations, sizes, and prices—details I find especially interesting. The drawings may have been part of marketing materials, as portions of the descriptions are neatly typed to the right of the objects. Additional sizes, color variations, and prices are handwritten in the margins.
Beyond their informational value, I find these drawings visually beautiful and potentially insightful in showing how color combinations were thoughtfully developed on paper. Here are four drawings with pictures from our website of comparable pieces. — Karen Beeman
