Jim Sutterfield of Corning, NY provides a technical response on Pyrex

Alan, some Technical for John Styler. Pyrex to most Corning people means code 7740 glass with an expansion coefficient of +/- 32. This is low compared to most glass compositions and is the factor that allows the glass to be used in heat applications of top of stove. This is only possible as long as the thickness is minimized so temperature differential between the heated surface and the opposite surface does not set up excessive thermal stress. Corning operated a plant for years in Okla.making blown items for heating liquids on top of stove or in Science items with bunson burners but these were ALWAYS relatively thin walled. Pyrex has also been used for years as oven products and are much thicker but the use instructions usually warn not to put into a hot oven. The product and oven heating together within the oven temperature range works. One item Corning started adding after electric stoves became very popular was a simple wire form to make a spacer between the glass and the heat surface to allow the heat to spread slightly and prevent hot spot direct heat transfer.

I would suggest that John consider the simple spacer because the older teapot might be a little thicker and the newer stoves a little hotter.
