Issue 440
From Ed Bush of Painted Post, NY, a new revelation.
Is it true that Frederick Carder was a pianist? On page 5 of Fanny K. Devine’s memoir of her working as Frederick Carder’s housekeeper in 1952-1953 she states the following: “As a youth, in his teens, Mr Carder appeared in concert as a pianist in England and on the Continent. Later in the article she wrote that Mr. Carder wouldn’t have a piano in the house as it would detract from his glass work. So far as I know, this information appears nowhere else in the Carder literature, and I suspect that someone was “putting her on.” If it isn’t true this may be the time to put it to rest. Club members with an explanation are invited to respond. Being a ragtime pianist myself, I have a particular interest in this issue.
