A FEW FINAL SYMPOSIUM THOUGHTS AND REMINDERS

With the Symposium just a few days away, here are some final thoughts and reminders:

1. The Return of Color to Steuben – Robert Nachman, Steuben’s Vice President of Product Design and Marketing is still coming. Obviously, his presentation will be a little different, but he has graciously offered to devote a significant portion of his time slot on Friday afternoon to answering questions. Come prepared with what you would like to know about Steuben’s recent past and closing and Mr. Nachman will do his best to provide information that he has and can share.

2. Frederick Carder’s Smalls – Group Collectors’ Choice Session – Don’t forget to bring your Frederick Carder “small” to the Symposium – any piece of Carder Steuben less than 6 inches high or wide. Dig through your collection and find a perfume, whimsey, salt, cordial, paperweight, vase or any other object that fits the definition of a “small” and share with everyone why the color, shape, pattern, acquisition story or sentimental value is so special to you. Maximum audience participation will make this session most successful.

3. Rakow Library Volunteer Session and Library Tour – Even if you didn’t initially indicate interest in the Rakow Library Volunteer Session and Library Tour, please don’t hesitate to participate. The session will run from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Thursday afternoon. Stop by any time for as long as your schedule permits. The Library staff has pulled material from the Frederick Carder archives and, under their supervision, we will be able to help catalog and preserve this material. Plus, the staff will conduct a tour of the new storage section of the Library (not open to the public) which houses the portions of the Library’s collection that do not circulate.

4. Auction – We have a great selection of auction items this year and Mike Horton, a professional auctioneer, will be with us once again. Please remember that we can only take cash or checks as payment for auction purchases. We are NOT able to process credit cards.

5. CMoG Membership Card – Remember to bring your CMoG membership card. It will facilitate admission to the Museum and insure that you get your 15% membership discount on any items you purchase in the Museum’s GlassMarket. Don’t worry if you don’t have your card or can’t find it. The name tag you receive Friday morning will admit you to the Museum as well.

6. Advance Planning – For those of you who do advance planning, the probable dates for the 2012 Symposium are September 13, 14 and 15.

good morning All – As our Symposium approaches, I want to advise those driving to Corning via I-81 and I-86 to check online sites before heading out. Weather channel has shown river gages at or above flood stages from Washington DC, throughout eastern PA, western NJ, and southern tier of NY.

Corning and Elmira areas are fine. Getting there may be another story. Not sure when “states of emergency – no travel” bans will be lifted. Portions of major highways are totally shut down and back roads and bridges are washed out.

In the last two weeks we have gotten rain from Hurricanes Irene and Lee. Devastation worse than floods of 2006 and some comparing to Hurricane Agnes that hit Corning in 1972. We are drying out now and hopefully by Thursday all will be ok.

Bring your maps with you, visit AAA. Most are sold out here. I am not sure of DOT or FEMA web sites but you can check www.ynn.com for Southern Tier NY.
