I am very sad to tell you that David Schultz passed away Friday night from heart complications. He was in hospital for a month hoping to have the aortic valve replaced but so many complications happened, that it never was done.

David was a buyer and collector of all sorts of things. Almost everything in our home has a story to go with it. I look at pictures and objects and remember where we got it, and how many times I said to David “where are we going to put another collectable”. His answer was you will find a place and I always did.

Sleepless In Seattle

There was a hanging fixture with three Steuben shades, offered on eBay several years ago, and advertised as the ones in a scene from ‘Sleepless in Seattle.’ When I next viewed the movie on a commercial channel – without access to subscription movie channels – I noted they were in wall sconces at a dinner in a home in Seattle. The length of the chains of the fixture offered on eBay would have made it dangerous for those of us in earthquake country.

(One of my college students related the story of what it is like to experience an earthquake on the 21st floor of a high-rise. Ten or so years ago, on an Easter Sunday, that same quake sent me scurrying, as my tenth floor condo had enough lateral movement to cause several table lamps to go over, though no damage to anything but hardware. The student’s kitchen hanging lamp swung so wildly that it went up and smashed against the ceiling! As I have several hanging fixtures, and mine have Carder globes, I would hate to see what would be their fate in a major quake, though if that extreme, I probably wouldn’t be around any more to worry about such things…!)

I seem to recall that the three shades – perhaps like #2265, with blue drape or pull feather – went for something around 4k.
