Grotesque Rouge Flambe?

From David Goldstein

I remember seeing and handling the “Rouge Flambe” Grotesque many years ago when it showed up in a dealer’s booth at a New York antique show. I think it was priced somewhere around $10,000, which would have been reasonable if the piece was actually Carder Rouge Flambe. The form was similar to or may actually have been #7535, a common Grotesque form. One issue running against there being a real Rouge Flambe Grotesque is timing. Rouge is generally considered to have been done in 1916 and 1917, and the Grotesque forms are mostly from the 1920’s.

There was lot of discussion about the piece at the time. I did not believe the piece was right then and I still don’t believe it is right. It was handled and examined by a number of knowledgable Steuben collectors and dealers, most of whom did not believe that the piece was right. The consensus was that it was probably Czech, but some thought it was Murano.

I do not know what happened to the piece. I have a vague recollection that it was seen by Bob or Bobby Rockwell but they would not authenticate it as Rouge. They were very careful in their authentications and usually wanted both provenance and proof that the shape was made in Rouge. Since there is no known period documentation for a Rouge Flambe Grotesque, I seriously doubt that either of them would have authenticated the piece.

It’s Time For A Celebration

A Carder Birthday Celebration, Welcome Reception and Glass Show is the feature for Thursday evening, September 15 as part of the Carder Steuben Symposium. September 18 will mark Frederick Carder’s 153rd birthday.

The Club will honor Tom and Peetie Dimitroff for their many years of hosting the Annual Carder Dinner, which they retired from last year. The event will also include a Glass Show, full of Carder Steuben pieces from our member dealers.

Former Carder Dinner guests are invited. Tickets are $25 per person in advance, but included in the registration fee if attending the Symposium.

Reservations can be made by contacting Symposium Chair, Bonnie Salzman at bsalzman@msn.com no later than September 2.
