The Wichita Museum of Art has a major Steuben collection. Both Carder and post-Carder. Not
merely a static collection, but they are continually building to their collection and recently have made some fabulous additions. e.g. a decorate rouge flambé. View their entire collection at:

In 2009 they are planning on a major Carder exhibition. They would like to coordinate this with the Carder Steuben Club. Some of the preliminary thinking is to tie in an opening with an invitation to a one day seminar put on jointly between the Museum and the Club.
As most of you know the Club does a two day Symposium annually around the time of Mr. Carder’s birthday in Corning at the Corning Museum. This year, Sept. 18-20. Because there are deep Steuben roots and rich resources in Corning, the home of Steuben, it geographically draws attendance from the broad Corning region. Most attendees are from New York state and surrounding or nearby states, plus a number from Florida.
Scott Hansen has done some demographic work. At last year’s Symposium no one came from west
of the Mississippi. However, we have quite a few members from the west, particularly from
California. The thought is it might be nice to run another program and reach out, and this might be just that opportunity. Whether we would draw a broader collector group or not is problematic.
However, it seems like not a lot of downside to it because this exhibit would take place without regard to that. It just provides another opportunity to show Carder’s work, reach some additional collectors and create exposure for a museum that plans on a continuing and growing their Steuben collection. Not enough of those, that’s for sure. Any thoughts on this will be welcomed.
Incidentally, we last posted an article in Antique week that gave a good report on the history of Steuben, including the Carder period, as well as commentary on the state of the market. Jeff Purtell was quoted at some length. While it read well enough, Jeff wants to disclaim the accuracy of quotes and clear the record.

the media has misquoted my comments in this article. I never claimed to be a dealer in Steuben Art Glass—and I never indicated how much business I conduct. Furthermore, I am Jeffrey F. Purtell and have never used Jeff E. Purtell—-never believe what you read seems to again be the only truth in the written media
