Clarification
Alan,
In the discussion two days ago in the Gazette of Mike Moline’s 938 vase Jan Baer states that there was a corporate ownership relationship (parent/subsidiary) between the T. G. Hawkes & Company firm and Steuben Glass Works.
That is incorrect. Steuben Glass Works was formed in 1903 as a personal venture owned by Thomas Hawkes and Frederick Carder (family members had ownership interests later). See the discussion in Jane Spillman’s book, The American Cut Glass Industry – T. G. Hawkes and his Competitors at page 292, as well as the discussion of the founding of Steuben Glass Works in Gardner and Dimitroff.
Steuben Glass Works was founded for the purpose of producing colorless glass blanks for T. G. Hawkes & Company. Steuben Glass Works was purchased by Corning Glass Works and became a division of that company in 1918.
