SYMPOSIUM HIGHLIGHTS
Mastering Modernity: The Interwoven Legacies of Walter Dorwin Teague and Sidney Waugh at Steuben Glass
Symposium attendees have asked for a program on Waugh and Teague for years, but we had some difficulty finding the right person to speak. We finally found Cynthia Williams, who has been active in the field of the history of decorative arts for over two decades. Perfect. We signed her up!
Cindy will present on industrial designer Walter Dorwin Teague and fine arts sculptor Sidney Waugh and the pivotal roles they each played in Steuben Glass’s dramatic transition to a modern design ethos in the 1930s.
Waugh’s 30 years of brilliant design initiatives for Steuben have earned him enduring acclaim, and today his artistic legacy continues to benefit from further analysis. On the other hand, Teague’s true influence at Steuben has been obscured. Despite being acknowledged today as one of America’s founders of the industrial design profession, categorical judgments about his glass designs and a general confusion about the length and nature of his relationship with the company have clouded the overall significance of Teague’s involvement in the ascendancy of the modern style at Steuben.
Juxtaposing the individual contributions Teague and Waugh made to the early ‘modern’ era at the company opens new pathways for understanding how Steuben Glass navigated the business and artistic complexities it faced during the 1930s.
