In describing five pieces of Steuben at the Art Institute of Chicago the following appeared in the last Gazette.

“The small collection of five “Steuben” pieces at The Art Institute of Chicago are all venetian glass that was NOT donated as Steuben.”

JoAnn Godawa of Bellevue, Nebraska corrects this statement

The above is incorrect, the glass WAS donated as being Steuben. I said it was not SOLD as Steuben.

Probably, after being on display, the general public brought it to the attention of the museum that is was not Steuben. Dr. Inoui was an avid Steuben collector who lived in Chicago and had ties to the museum. I feel sure that his input was respected.

Jo Ann

Bob Mueller of Minneapolis shares his Steuben experience with the Art Institute of Chicago

DEAR SCOTT AND MEMBERS,

I MIGHT SUGGEST TO MEMBERS ON THE CHICAGO ART INSTITUTE OF ARTS, THAT THEY HAVE MORE THEN HAS BEEN MENTIONED. IN MY LIBRARY I HAVE 2 LETTERS FROM THEM THAT PUT THEM OVER THE 5 PIECES MENTIONED IN OTHER LETTERS . IN DOING MY RESEARCH ABOUT 10 YEARS AGO A PERSON SENT ME A LIST OF CARDER STEUBEN GLASS THAT THEY HAVE IN THEIR COLLECTION, THEY DO NOT HAVE THE COLOR OF THE PIECE OR THE SHAPE NUMBER, BUT WHEN YOU LOOK AT THE INFORMATION THAT IS ON THE LIST OF ITEMS SENT TO ME, THEY GIVE YEAR OF POSSIBLE TIME THE ITEM WAS MADE,WHAT IT IS( COVERED VASE) WHOM GAVE IT TO THEM ETC.

I WAS ALSO AT THE CHICAGO INSTIT. BACK IN THE MID 1980,S ,TALKED WITH A GENTLEMAN ABOUT WHAT THEY MIGHT HAVE IN CARDER STEUBEN GLASS, AND HE TOLD ME THAT THEY DID HAVE QUITE A FEW PIECES ,BUT THAT THEY WERE ALL PUT AWAY AT THE TIME, HE SEEMED TO KNOW WHAT HE WAS TALKING ABOUT WITH MR, CARDERS GLASS.

IN MY RESEARCH THE LIST I HAVE FROM THE CHICAGO INSTIT,IF I CAN COUNT RIGHT, THEY HAD 126 PIECES OF CARDER STEUBEN GLASS FROM THIS LIST I HAVE FROM THEM IN (LETTER 1992 )..

ALSO I BELEIVE THAT WITH MARSHALL FIELDS RIGHT THERE IN CHICAGO ,AND MANY WEALTHLY FAMILYS ,THAT ALONG THE WAYOTHER GREAT PIECES OF CARDER GLASS DID NOT END UP THERE .I WOULD LOVE TO GO ON AHUNT THERE .

ALSO IN THE SECOND LETTER FROM THEM I WAS INFORMED THAT THEY HAD AN EXHIBIT “STEUBEN GLASS,THE CARDER YEARS ,THAT WAS A SMALL COLLECTION ON LOAN O THEM.

I HAVE FOUND THAT IT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO DO IF A PERSON IS GOING SOMEWHERE TO SEE WHAT THEY ARE INTERSTED IN IS TO CALL OR WRITE AHEAD OF TIME. IN THE MANY TIMES I HAVE BEEN IN THE CORNING MUSEUM LIBRARY ,I USALLY WROTE AHEAD OF TIME TO ASK THEM CERTAIN QUESTIONS TO SEE IF THEY HAVE ANY ITEMS I WOULD BE LOOKING FOR. IF I HAD NOT DONE THAT ,VIRGINIA WRIGHT WOULD NOT HAVE HAD 20 PLUS BOXES READY FOR ME WHEN I GOT THERE IN THE MID 1980,S,OR WOULD GAIL HAVE HAD THINGS AND A LIST OF WHERE I COULD GO IN THE LIBRARY TO FIND WHAT I WANTED.

I HOPE THIS MAY HELP ALL OF US COLLECTORS IN FINDING OUT THE THINGS WE ARE LOOKING FOR TO HELP ALL OF US
