John Gates and Mrs. James Roosevelt
27 Artists in Crystal – Again
Several weeks ago I shared some press photos from the Steuben Exhibition Twenty Seven Artists in Crystal. This is another photo from that event. It features John Monteith Gates accompanied by Mrs. James Roosevelt (daughter-in-law of President Franklin Roosevelt). Behind them on the left is shape A309 designed by John Gregorey and on the right is shape A325 designed by Andre Derain.
Gates was an architect hired by the Houghtons to be the director of design at Steuben when control of Steuben was taken away from Carder in 1932. In her book, MJ Madigan credits Carder and Gates with the co-design of at least five shapes – 7663 (cocktail glass), 7707 (vase), 7709 (vase), 7710 (candlestick) and 7716 (finger bowl – although I think Gardner properly characterizes this as a wine glass cooler). It must have been quite an interesting collaboration between the former director of design at Steuben and his replacement.

The compote is one of the few Steuben cut glass pieces I have, and have not tried to determine the pattern, whether by Steuben or another cutting shop on a Carder blank.
