Or, How to Get to Corning, NY

With hotel arrangements in place for the Symposium, it’s time to think about how to get to Corning.

Driving, of course, is always a possibility. For air service, the Corning/Elmira airport (ELM) is just a few miles from downtown Corning. Delta serves ELM from Detroit. Allegiant flies to Corning from Orlando and Tampa. It’s also possible to fly to Buffalo, Syracuse, Binghamton or Rochester and drive the rest of the way. Three times a day bus service is also possible from New York City (with a stop in Binghamton). See coachusa.com/shortline for bus details. There is no train service.

Our first event of the Symposium will start early evening (currently approximately 6:30 pm) on Thursday, September 14. That leaves plenty of time for travel on Thursday. The last event of the Symposium is our banquet and glass auction on Saturday evening, September 16 so all day Sunday is available for return travel.

However, please note that Symposium programming occupies most of the day on Friday and Saturday. There are short periods of time during the lunch hour and at the end of the day to explore the Museum (where all of the Symposium sessions are held) or shop in downtown Corning.

Many who have attended the Symposium in the past arrive in Corning on Wednesday so they have Wednesday and Thursday to explore and shop. The Corning Museum and the Rakow Library are both open on Sundays as are some (but not all) of the shops in downtown Corning. Discounted hotel rates are available for two days before and after the Symposium if you wish to stay additional days.

Another Cairn Gorm Discovery

Alan, I thought readers might enjoy seeing this compote, Shape 6096 as an example of the color Cairn Gorm. I wish I had the matching candlesticks, but I have never found them. The color seems to be exactly that of the natural stone it is named for.
