Former Steuben Designer
The Carder Steuben Club is delighted to announce that Peter Yenawine, former Steuben designer, will present at the Carder Steuben Symposium on Saturday, September 17. Peter’s career was “Launched by Steuben” and he will take Symposium attendees on a journey from design school to designer at Steuben. Peter has created of his own crystal company, Crystal Signatures, specializing in corporate gifts, state gifts and one-of-a-kind private commissions. We look forward to hearing and seeing this fantastic presentation!
Search The Factory Line Drawings
from Rande Bly
I am so glad to see that Dr. Greg Merkel is giving a presentation on Topaz and Amber at the symposium.
What would y’all say if I were to tell you we have had Topaz and Amber reversed from day one? It Started with Gardner and has been going ever since.
We are all so familiar with Pomona Green and Topaz. What about that infamous Celeste Blue and Topaz combination. Sorry to tell you but the honey colored glass is really Amber. Hey let’s not forget the Amethyst and Topaz combination or what about Antique Green and Amber? Well… we finally got one right thanks to Marshall Ketchum that identified it as as Blue Grey and Amber.
How do you know this Rande, you may ask? Simple enough. Go to the Carder Steuben web site and start searching every shape that has what we know of that had a combination of one of these colors and the honey colored glass that we have all known as Topaz. Then pull the factory line drawings that accompany these shapes. Some of them will come with color descriptions. You will notice that every one of them list the factory record of the accompanying color to be Amber and not Topaz. Not a single one says Topaz, not one!
Take the challenge and look them up. Needless to say this symposium will be very interesting!
I will show some photo’s today demonstrating the example. I invite all of you to research it on your own.
Always Amazing
Dr. Greg Merkel is so knowledgeable about Carder Steuben glass and has given so many talks to Symposium attendees, we just give him a time slot and let him start talking. Greg will continue with his color presentations, this time focusing on “Carder’s Yellow, Amber and Brown Steuben Glassware” at the Carder Steuben Symposium, September 15 – 17. Greg’s talks are always amazingly informative, and careful notes should be taken.
