“Tiffany Blue”

From Louise Luther’s book, Miller’s Art Glass, How to Compare and Value. At page 77 she critiques a Steuben Dark Jade Blue Vase with Intarsia collar.

Iridized Dark Jade Blue over flint white vase decorated with Gold Aurene leaf-and-vine and Intarsia Collar c. 1915

Shape #2457

10 1/4 inches high

Louise critique of the vase includes:

“Angularity of design suggests the Egyptian revival, Art Deco style of the 1920’s. This vase shows Steuben’s innovative work.

‘Applied gold Aurene bands frame the flared collar with Intarsia decoration’ design increases value and desirability.

“The vase’s height allows the gold Aurene leaf and vine decoration around the shoulder to draw attention up to the border.

“A brilliant blue glass layer cased in opaque white gives depth, vitality and contrast to the gold–details that add value.”

Tom Dimitroff in his Frederick Carder and Steuben Glass text, at Fig. 10.40, p. 224 observes: “This rare vase is an example of what is probably Carder’s ‘Tiffany Blue’ cased on Flint White with Gold Aurene ornament. Most pieces of this type are found in shapes similar to those used for Tyrian pieces.
