Three Kinds of Silver Application

Feb 25, 2013
Issue 1680

There are three kinds.

1. a deposit….very thin electroplate too the goo. This will wear off, rub off, and for sure polish off with polish/ this requires only pennies worth of sterling

2. overlay……very, very thick electroplate to the goo….so thick you can etch and carve it or stamp it sterling and polish it without it coming off. You could add ounces of Sterling with this method.

3. and sheet sterling cut, pierced, tooled, and wrapped items…..Alvin did not make this kind on Steuben blanks

For overlay at turn of the century you could take a 90 cent piece of glass and add $4.00 worth of sterling( up to 4 ounces) and will have the weight slightly greater than 4 old silver dollars. This process added $5.00 more in labor turning the 90 cent piece of glass into a $9.90 piece of art. These pieces are very valuable today. Four ounces of silver runs about $120.00 today

The goo contained sterling to start with so the electroplate process deposited the sterling electrically to the sterling in the goo

Rande – I think Silver Deposit and Silver Overlay are one in the same…….. Silver Deposit was used in the early years and Silver Overlay later.
