Markings on Colorless Cut and Engraved Carder Steuben Glass

John Styler of Prospect Heights, IL asks, “Were the Steuben cut glass pieces marked or was it strictly the design?”

Ed. response. John, as best I know Carder’s colorless cut and engraved glass was not marked, except perhaps with paper labels. Readers, please add to this and help others better understand and become aware of Carder’s cut glass. I suspect Carder’s cut and engraved glass isn’t well known about or collected because it is similar to the cut glass of the early 1900’s and hard to recognize. Likewise, Carder during the same time period was well known for his colored glass that is much easier to identify by color and shape, and sometimes markings.

John, there is a good discussion and pictures on Carder’s cut glass by Jane Shadel Spillman at pp. 149-177 in Dimitroff’s, Frederick Carder and Steuben Glass.

In coming days we’ll put some attention to engraved Carder Steuben Glass and I hope we’ll generate readers’ comment and insight.

At p.149 of the Spillman section she says in summary: “It is likely that Carder had designed both cut and engraved glass for Stevens & Williams, his former employer. He is said to have disliked cutting as a method of glass decoration, but he certainly knew how to design and supervise the manufacture of cut glass of good quality.”
