Continuing the search for museums that have Carder glass in their collections, we next focus on The Toledo Museum of Art. www.toledomuseum.org

This is one of America’s premier glass museums. In 2006 they built a Glass 74,000 square foot Pavilion which was opened in 2006. They report on their website that the glass collection features more than 5,000 works of art from ancient to contemporary times. They also say “The glass objects at the Toledo Museum of Art comprise one of the most comprehensive and historically significant collections dedicated to the medium in the world.” The building structure is considered itself a work of art with panels of curved glass. Sadly, their collection appears not to be searchable on its website.

However, in 1993 the museum published a 877 page catalogue based upon the Toledo collection, then reported at over 7,000 pieces of glass. This two volume tome was authored by Kenneth M. Wilson. This text pictures about 10 pieces of Carder glass including a Gold Aurene decorated fan vase (#6297), Blue Aurene stump vase (#2744), an art nouveau Gold Aurene compote (#6058), Gold Aurene #2775 bowl, Oriental Poppy Goblet, Green goblet on alabaster stem, Rose Cluthra vase, black over green acb, and a millifiori plate that is obviously cracked and reglued.

Bottom line is only about 10 objects out of 5,000 or 7,000 objects is a small representation for a major glass museum claiming a “broadly significant collection”. The museum was founded, as you might expect in Toledo, by Edward Drummond Libbey. His mission was to form a comprehensive collection tracing the entire history of glass. Anyhow, some out there with better background might be able to fill in some more information on The Toledo Museum of Art and its major glass collection.
