THE THICKNESS OF GLASS

Oct 19, 2009
Issue 715

First off, Scott Hansen, the Chair of the Carder Steuben Club’s Symposium is soliciting any ideas you may have for next year’s Symposium. Program ideas or speakers.

Next, Dick Stark of Bethesda, Maryland comments on color and thickness of glass.
…..dick weerts made a remark that he agrees with me re color being a function of thickness of under layer. that’s tru to some extent but not entirely what i meant… actually, the base color is more of factor. in u.s. they got purple by applying a blue over red layer. woodall did that at webb as well. at s & w they actually mixed the two to create a single purple. the result is more vibrant generally but less interesting.for carving the difference is vast. you can create a far greater shading effect. also, when you add arsenic or antimony which was routinely done it creates a color change as well. it is used to make the glass translucent.
