“The Smithsonian Institutional American Glass Manufacturers, 1917-1929”

The onset of World War I appears to have slowed the pattern of collecting American glass at the Smithsonian…. The loss of two employees …had left the division with no staff members. The 1924 and 1929 gifts from Corning’s Steuben Division notwithstanding , Gilbert’s resignation in 1920 brought to an end the practice of organized efforts by Smithsonian curators to collect American glass from manufacturers for educational exhibits.
