Issue 184
At this year’s Symposium held last weekend in Corning the staff of the Rakow
library graciously provided wonderful examples of materials on Carder
Steuben from their archives. They showed us some of the kinds of things
available for research. As part of this they put together for our group a flyer
with some examples of the art talents of Mr. Carder, some of his very direct
and blunt prose, as well as listing resources at the library. The Rakow has
graciously allowed us to share with you a few of the handouts which I hope you’ll
find enjoyable.
As part and parcel of what is available at the Museum the staff worked with us
and made available a series of fascinating letters between Mr. Carder and J.
Stanley Brothers, Jr. Ed Bush abstracted interesting parts of this discourse,
including Mr. Carder’s apparently typical brusque comments. Also, the library
was a recipient of the notebooks of Mr. Carder with their color formulas and a
presentation by Jim Sutterfield and Albert Werner made for an insight into
what has heretofore been a well kept secret. It has long been thought that no
color formulas still existed since Mr. Carder guarded those with great care
during his career.
