About the Text American Art Glass

You may have noticed that the Gazette has for a number of weeks has been abstracting “Descriptive Glass Entries” from John A. Shuman III’s 1988 text, “The Collector’s Encylopedia of American Art Glass.” This text provides coverage of a number of glass makers, including in addition to the Descriptive Entries about 35 pages devoted to Steuben. The Entries are well written and instructive and cover many makers of glass. However, does that make the Entries always correct? Of course, not. This isn’t the definitive work on Carder Steuben. But, it adds to the knowledge base and needs to be viewed critically. A couple of days ago we quoted the Entries on Aurenes. Tom Dimitroff responded in the Gazette that there is only Blue and Gold Aurene. Brown, Red and Green Aurenes, while iridescent and having Gold Aurene threads in them have differing descriptives. So, if you see something you don’t agree with, let us know. Below is another challenge on bubbles.

Random Bubbles

From having made glass from raw materials and worked glass in similar ways to Steuben at Orient & Flume Art Glass we have to take exception to this paragraph about random bubbles and eliminating green and pinkish tinges with use of a willow rod. This is not true. I hate to see this information passed on without any comment.
