The Glass Is Sending A Message

THE GLASS IS CALLING OUT TO YOU

I found this issue of the Gazette most refreshing as too many dealers and collectors fail to realize that it is not just merchandise or an object. It is a tea pot ~ it is a pitcher, etc ~ use it! That tea pot is begging for some tea leaves. The tray wants to hold cookies and so on and so forth. I once had a thanksgiving meal with friends and family where the entire table was covered with Tiffany and Steuben glass. It was one of the most opulent and memorable meals I have ever eaten. Your Steuben stemware is begging for use ~ listen to it ~ toast to Carder with a glass of wine.

RAILROAD CROSSINGS

I have had time to study the Steuben globe in the Union Pacific Rail Road lantern that Jo Ann Godawa sent me. The lantern is amazing and it is the only example of Steuben copper red I have ever seen. Thank you Jo Ann. Mr. Carder said copper red was ok for stop lights but not for fine art glass. I would have to agree. It is a dark red. It is not the deep rich red we see in Selenium Red. It is the red seen in depression glass. It is commonly called ruby. For those of you who know what Anchor Hocking red looks like it is the same. It is the ruby red seen in present day inexpensive glass ware. I bought some Anchor Hocking ruby pieces about 8 years ago brand new. When Carder was working with reds like Gold Ruby, Rouge Flambe, and selenium cadmium red I guess it was just a little boring to toss copper in a batch of glass to get red. However it is a perfect fit for a train stop light!!

Notice the UPRR lightly acid etched in the glass.
