The Gazette #1615 Change & AOL

Nov 25, 2012
Issue 1616

You may notice that this Carder Steuben Club Gazelle Gazette is coming from a different e-mail address. Let me explain. Friday we sent out Gazette #1615. After all these many years and basically the same e-mail list, AOL recipients’ e-mails were rejected for the Gazette. This meant that close to 20% of our readers didn’t get the Gazette. Research indicates that AOL has a spam catcher process that isn’t well defined to the public, but once invoked there is little that can be done to undo it.

So, to keep the Gazette coming we’re now looking into a new platform to send these e-mails that won’t go awry with spam filters. However, in the meantime to keep the Gazette going until we develop a new platform for delivery we’ve resorted to a gmail e-mail account. Hopefully it will work and deliver to the entire mailing list. Won’t know until we try it. We’ll keep our fingers crossed. You still can contact me at ashovers@kddk.com, or by replying to this e-mail address.

Now to some initial content. Scott Hansen sends along this item on use of the Carder Steuben Club website

Alan –

I was looking at the web site statistics on the web site this morning and noted that the “new” web site was launched November 2010. After 2 years (24 months), the web site now contains 4,644 photographs and 5,808 Line Drawings with 25,042 Site Visits for a total of 310,552 Page Views. Maybe there is a 2 Year Anniversary story there for one of the upcoming Gazettes.

Webmaster Marshall Ketchum tells us how he has found so many thousands of examples of Mr. Carder’s creations to place pictures on the www.cardersteubenclub.org web site.

The great majority of photos posted on our website come from auctions such as ebay, live auctions and other Internet auction venues. When I find a piece on ebay that I can use I capture the photo and then send a message to the seller requesting permission to use it. I have only been refused once by a seller who said I had to buy the piece to use the photo. We have had permission from Steve Early to use photos in his catalogs almost from the beginning of the website. There are a few individuals both members and non-members who will regularly send photos of new pieces they acquire. While such photos are always welcome they make up perhaps only 5 or 10% of the photos added to the site.
