The color purple

Bobby Rockwell answers Tommy Dreiling’s question about the many names of amethyst.

I think that one has to approach this with caution. Gardner had supplied us with a list of colors, not necessarily identified, that he had found in factory records, sales brochures, and I believe Carder’s records. What we don’t know is what colors might be named twice only in different terms. For example Bob Leavy, who was head of sales at Steuben during the Carder years and beyond, had told me that Selinium Red and Cerise Ruby were one of the same. I think that if this is the case then it may very well repeat itself with other colors that are on Paul’s list. Personally I think that Greg’s work will finally clear much of this up and that his efforts should be much applauded: Paul’s list is important because these names are in existence in regards to Steuben. This all takes time. In other words don’t throw the list out.
