Do you like to eat dinner? Do you like to see, touch and buy beautiful glass? Do you like to talk to people that collect and love the same glass that you do? If you do, then you are in for a treat! This year’s Symposium will feature a glass show and dinner on Friday evening, September 19. Come and interact with other Carder Steuben Club members, renew acquaintances, meet new friends, look at beautiful glass and toast your extraordinary luck at being in the right place at the right time. Persons interested in being a dealer at the show should contact show chair David Goldstein at elvidant@aol.com
Alan –
I assume you have a copy of Perrot, Gardner and Plaut’s book STEUBEN – Seventy Years of American Glassmaking on your shelf. I had occasion to pick up mine recently and it prompted a couple of thoughts for the Gazette. First, I had forgotten how much good information is contained in the book. I just kept reading long after I found what I was looking for. Second, the next time you want to publish excerpts from a book, this would be a good source. It was an exhibition catalog so the description of pieces is short and to the point and they contain useful information. Third, while reading the description of a particular piece – the Verre de Soie bowl – on page 31 I learned that Verre de Soie was originally called Flint Iridescent, apparently an accurate technical description but abandoned in favor of the more romantic Verre de Soie. Why don’t you consider the possibility of creating a new feature of the Gazette – Fun Fact, or Fun Fact of the Day, or Fun Fact of the Week or Occasional Fun Fact. Ask readers to submit a one sentence fact about Steuben, something not generally known, with a source citation. You can use the Flint Iridescent to Verre de Soie change as the first one.
