Issue 930
The following questions were recently posed to Scott Hansen, chairman of this year’s Carder Steuben Symposium.
Scott, if I want to come what are the opportunities for buying? Shops, the new market that you’re creating? Just how does it work? How many dealers might I expect? When is the best time to come? Early Thursday or late Thursday? What airlines come to Corning? Any other places I might fly into?
Scott Answers
We’ve received a couple of questions about the Symposium which I will answer through the Gazette so everyone has the information.
The first question dealt with travel to Corning. Many drive. For those who don’t want to drive, the closest airport is the Elmira/Corning Regional Airport (www.ecairport.com). It is served by Delta, US Air and Allegiant airlines and their regional partners. It is about 10 miles to Corning from the airport. It is also possible to fly to Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse or Binghamton and drive from there. There is no train service to Corning. To be able to participate fully in the Symposium, it is necessary to arrive on Thursday, September 23.
The second question dealt with shopping opportunities in Corning, primarily for Carder Steuben. Of course, the first opportunity is the glass show organized by the club which will be held in the Carder Room at the Radisson Hotel from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 23. This is a small show for members and Symposium attendees only (it will not be open to the public) and we have planned a social component to this show with a cash bar and hors d’oeuvres. Not only will there be glass to purchase but this is an excellent opportunity to catch up with old friends and meet some new ones. However, don’t spend your entire shopping budget there.
We will also be conducting a glass auction following the Saturday night banquet. This is the major fund raising activity for the club and it is always a good opportunity to add something to your collection. More details about this glass auction will be forthcoming shortly. One note about the auction – only cash or checks (no credit cards) can be used to pay for auction purchases.
Finally, there are shops along Market Street (downtown Corning) that carry Carder Steuben as well as other glass and antiques. Many are open until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday evening and will be open until 5:00 p.m. or later on Friday following the end of the Symposium programming.
Let Scott Hansen (hngseh@aol.com) know if you have any other Symposium questions.
