Symposium Happenings

Feb 3, 2008
Issue 326

I’m reminded of going to an antique show. Passing by a booth and spotting a drop dead piece of Carder Steuben. The dealer says “oh, yes someone just brought this in ten minutes ago”.
Well, I feel that way about what’s happening with Symposium Planning. Yes, we’re scheduled for Sept. 18-20 at the Corning Museum (CMoG) in Corning, NY. Planning has begun. You may recall that after last year’s Symposium member Scott Hansen of Briarcliff Manor, NY did a satisfaction survey of the Symposium. The results were based on an usually high participation of attendees; and gave great marks to the Symposium. Also, many suggestions on various details and ideas on programming. We shared the results with everyone on this mailing list months ago. Well, who knows the details of those survey results better than Scott? Scott contacted me the other day to make a suggestion for the upcoming year. Well, why not? I asked, “Scott would you be the co-chairman?” In a heartbeat, he said “yes”.
Let me tell you, not only is Scott participating as co-chairman, but already his has added many creative and helpful ideas. I expect this coming year’s Symposium will be a blockbuster of an event. So, mark those dates down on your calendar. This is a you don’t want to miss it event. I’ll, from time to time, share some of the programming with you. For example, Frederick Carder’s birth date is September 18. Every year on Mr. Carder’s birthday Tom & Peetie Dimitroff throw a birthday party. (1863–2008–sounds like 145 years) Their invite list includes the Carder Steuben Club members. For members, and Symposium attendees, the Dimitroff’s will be inviting us to share this birthday bash at the Corning Country Club. Besides a toast to Mr. Carder, usually Tom lines up a special speaker or two to share the podium with an instructive program on Mr. Carder. It’s a great evening. Often out of town attendees to the Symposium can’t attend because it doesn’t coincide with the Symposium dates. However, this year this Thursday night event will begin the warm up for the Symposium, and what a warm up it is.
A final item. In prior e-mails we have been reviewing a vase being sold by Target that has
similarities to a Carder acb vase.

Member Scott Coots of Rochester, NY adds this bit of
information:
Given the state of technology today, I could envision these vases being made to very specific measurements and then having the design milled onto the piece using a computerized milling machine. We engrave glass all the time using computerized equipment. This would just have to be deeper to penetrate the black layer.
