Steuben and the Current Status of the Crystal Industry
by Steve Bender
Steve Bender, Steuben Business Manager, gave us an interesting and informative update of Steuben from 2000 onward with a mention of the Schottenstein “experiment” to the repatriation of the brand by Corning. Steuben has many loyal customers; an increasing segment is for sports awards.
Due to concerns surrounding the use of lead in glass manufacture, contemporary production uses crystalline, a lead-free glass that is visually equivalent to lead crystal. Mr. Bender explained how Steuben glass is positioned market-share wise within the tabletop segment of the home goods industry.
