Symposium

Sep 18, 2007
Issue 284

Well, the 2007 Symposium is now history. Time for me and all those who
attended to come off “from the ceiling.” As Gary Volz said, In my opinion, the best thus
far. Corning is such a magical place. The facilities and support from CMoG is as good as it gets. The presentations were outstanding. Our final event is a banquet at Corning, Inc.’s headquarters overlooking the Chemung River. Elegant, with food to match. Then, all followed by an auction of some 79 pieces of Carder’s Steuben. This included a metallic Roycroft copper lamp base with Blue Aurene decoration cut to yellow jade, with an authentic historic shade, which sold for $4,500.00.
The auction is a fund raiser for the Club. While the Club gets a commission on glass sold, we also get outright contributions where the total sales price benefits the Club. This year we had a substantial number of outright gifts. Sort of floors me how many contributed. However, it shows the passion of those attending. The Club, in particular, thanks them for this generosity.

E-mails will follow on the Symposium bit, by bit.

At the Symposium The Rakow Library staff provided the results of their
research on our theme, Objects of Desire: The Unity of Metal & Glass. Some of
that research resonated deeply. I was not alone in discovering the answer to my
mystery, as were others for some object of theirs. For me the extremely
eloquent engraving and metal work on a limousine vase was done by Hawks, with a
metal holder that had a rubber insert to stop vibration & rattling. Hawks had a
patent pending on this insert. I now have a copy of a page from the Hawkes
catalogue of 1917.
The Rakow has and can find answers to so many mysteries. Later in the
Symposium Marsha Craft, an expert on DeVilbiss perfumes gave a professional
presentation that wowed the audience. In response The Rakow has provided a
bibliography on DeVilbiss, which is attached. If you have trouble opening, let me
know. Hopefully, we may get some parts of The DeVilbiss presentation and
perhaps some information from Marsha that can also be sent along.

First, I’ve been corrected on my spelling in the last e-mail. It is T.G. Hawkes & Company of Corning, NY.

Next, to a few items taking place at the membership meeting. The present officers and directors were re-elected, and we thank you for your support. That is Alan Shovers, President; Marshall Ketchum, Vice President; Jim Sutterfield, Treasurer; Dick Bright, Secretary; and Mark Buffa, Webmaster.

Considerable discussion took place on future leadership, the size of the board, term limits and the such. A consensus was reached that for the next membership meeting we should prepare a program of staggered board terms, 2 year terms for officers, limited perhaps to two terms. Also, an additional several board members will be added by the present board to begin implementing this process.
The membership unanimously approved supplying email addresses to the Steuben glass company so that they could send their e-mails to our members to implement our members getting invitations and promotions addressing vintage Steuben. Anyone not wanting to share should notify the Secretary, Dick Bright. mailto:rbright@stny.rr.com
The Museum reports that following last year’s publishing a brochure emphasizing Building “B”, funded in part by the Club, it appears that more and more visitors are finding the Carder collection. Suggestions were made on further distribution of the brochure. $1,000 was approved to fund glass cases for the West Virginia Museum of Glass.
Discussion on location of future Symposiums was addressed. It appears the consensus is to stay in Corning. Just too many natural synergies.

It’s been nice receiving e-mails saying “best ever” to the just completed
Symposium. So, we’d better tell you when we next meet so you can put it on
your 2008 calendars. Friday and Saturday, September 19 & 20, 2008. The
Thursday night before falls on Mr. Carder’s birthday. Tom & Peetie Dimitroff
host a birthday celebration at the Corning Country Club every year. So, the
opening event will be this birthday bash. What a way to start!

Just a few of the comments to show the type of response to the Symposium:

Needless to say We enjoyed the whole weekend!!! The items in the Auction were incredible!

This was the best Meeting ever!

Marshall Ketchum sends along a comment from a new member who is saying we
should do a survey. Good idea, but we’ve not developed any forms. If you want
to just reply by e-mail with your thoughts, please do. I have had a question from a relatively new member. They are wondering if we have ever used an evaluation form for the Symposium so that members could tell what they liked and what could use some improvement. Finally, several on the e-mail list have sent notes saying they couldn’t attend this year, but want to next. This reminds me, it’s time to join up if you haven’t already. Cost merely $35 and also gets you a membership in CMoG, inclusive.
What a deal! If you haven’t, please join; we need you. Attached is an application. Do it today.

At the Symposium our webmaster has reported on our website, www.cardersteubenclub.com The
past year has involved lots of maintenance work. Doesn’t always appear on the surface, but lots of progress on the technical side. Our site has received lots of praise and we owe a great deal of thanks to Mark.
Some questions arise as to listing jpgs and the whole process of how we vette the site. In response Mark Buffa, our webmaster, webmaster@cardersteubenclub.com wants it to be known that any question, queries or the such should be referred to him. In addition, he adds the following on maintenance of quality of the site.
As for vetting, I look at every picture and try to find it in Gardner first. Then go to the
extensive information we have on hand to find more details such as color and size. If
anything is in question it is put in a folder and held for further evaluation. All pictures go up unless there is a better one in the same color. Fairly straight forward and anyone has
the right to question something that is up and then it is reexamined for correctness. We
welcome this as it keeps us on our toes.
