Last week David Chadwick-Brown showed how “nesting plates” by stacking is a method of identification. I wanted to address the internal pattern in the 2028 Swirl Optic Ribbed plate. It also is a positive way to identify these plates. In the Steuben Amberina plate toward the center of the plate you could easily see what appeared to be like a flower in the pattern . The internal pattern in Steuben pieces are unique.

The internal flower design in the center of David’s Amberina Plate is the same as the faint flower showing in the bottom of the Cadmium Ruby plate.

The gather of glass was formed/molded with the optic ribbed pattern before blowing. The glass is of varying thickness and 16 sided at the outside rim. This is a positive and precise method of identification. The internal pattern of these plates are unique to Steuben and originate in the pontil, extending to the outside rim. The plates can be “nested” to show an exact match in size, thickness, and ribbing pattern. Just like a Walking Liberty gold coin these plates were struck before casting leaving a pattern that is more reliable to identification than a signature! In my opinion, this method will prove to be 100% positive in identification and fool proof.
