The Story

We’ve been picturing the collection of David Chadwick-Brown, along with his commentary on pieces in his collection. As a reminder, this all comes about because he opened his home to a glass collectors’ group in Southern California. What is particularly interesting is the story he is telling about many of his pieces. I would hope others would share a story about a prized piece or two, questions, stories on how it was found or whatever. Please share!

Picture and comments from David Chadwick-Brown

The fluted berry bowl and underplate are putative straw opal – one is marked ‘Steuben’ but both seller and I had doubts as to authenticity. Behind that is a topaz #938, with silver overlay. Behind that is a two prong candlestick, accounting for the variance in height.

On the right is a blue jade bowl, that is neither light blue, nor dark blue. It is marked, and was denominated as ‘royal blue,’ at the time of sale. No such name is in the list of colors, but once I had acquired a pagoda lamp, black over blue, it became evident that this is the color used there, and apparently some additional pieces were made – in berry bowls, and a two-pillar vase, which I have seen. Perhaps not a production color, these all seem to have come to the West Coast – whether as an intentional marketing ploy, or by happenstance.
