MODERN ADVOCACY
This is a response to Gazelle Gazette Issues 1739 and 1740.
We have been dues paying members of the Carder Steuben Club for quite a number of years but have never attended a meeting. I am an avid reader of the Gazette but have not responded prior to a few minutes ago when I tried to answer a query – which I hope was helpful.
But now I am responding with full interest in the plan to combine “Modern Steuben” to the pre-existing membership list.
I began “acquiring” Steuben in the late 1940’s and have continued my – and our – interest to the present. We have a few pieces of Carder Steuben, but the majority of the collection is post-Carder.
Our collection was the focus of a New Orleans Museum of Art show in 2004-2005 with an illustrated catalog of 128 pages. If any Carder Steuben members visit New Orleans we would be happy to have them see our collection at home.
By all means, bring the club up to date – and let us know how we can help.
AUDUBON PLATES
Partial reply to Kathy Hopkins regarding Steuben Audubon Plates.
The Audubon plates were designed in 1964.
We have two of the White Pelican plates – (the Louisiana State bird) – designed by Sidney Waugh.
The first one was purchased from Lillian Nassau in New York in 1994 for $1,520.00.
The second one was purchased at an auction gallery in New Orleans in 1995 for $1,200.00.
The earliest direct information I can get my hands on at the moment is the Steuben annual Christmas catalog for 1965 which shows one of a series of 12 Star Plates of similar size and original list price of $500.00 each.
Hope this helps. Dr. Isidore, Cohn, Jr.
2013 Carder Steuben Club annual Symposium will be held at The Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, NY from September 19-21, 2013. The festivities will begin with Frederick Carder’s 150th birthday celebration on the evening of September 18, 2013.
