Black Plate With Deeply Cut Pattern

re: Jan Baer’s Black Plate with Deeply Cut pattern

Hi Alan,

Michael again. I read Jan Baer’s query in GG #2492 with interest. I have a similar black glass plate with a nearly identical cutting on it, plus an applied sterling silver rim. It’s smaller than Jan’s plate, but the decoration is very close. I would say that they are identical, except for mine being scaled to fit a smaller plate. I attach photographs.

My plate is molded, and has a ground and polished bottom surface. Accordingly, I would guess that it is not Steuben, but rather, the work of a company on the quality level of Fostoria or Cambridge. Now, whether the cutting was done “in house” by the manufacturer, or a decorating company, I cannot say. Not surprisingly, my plate has no markings. Regardless of what company made it and/or decorated it, I enjoy simply using it on my table as a coaster for a bottle of wine.
