Steuben Commission

At this year’s Symposium David and Debby Schultz of New Vernon, NJ presented their collection. The Schultz’ have been collecting for 30 years. They’ve turned to the best of dealers for advice. It shows. It was quite a unique and special collection. However, the most moving part of their presentation was the piece they had commissioned not for themselves, but for their community. It is a Holocaust piece done by Steuben. “Rememberance” can be seen at the United Jewish Federation of Metro West in Whippany NJ.

Reactions to the middle initial “C”
First we hear from from Charles Sweigart of Reinholds, PA:
The question arises, Who was Frederick C Carder? Was he a real, other Frederick Carder or is the inscription a typo? Has anyone tried to discover his real identity? The quality of the gift and the close association to Northwood implied by the inscription indicate the giver was prosperous and probably closely involved in either glass production or the purchasing of quality glass products.

Next. Willson Craigie of Richmond, VA asks:
Remember the Steuben Company stock certificate at this year’s Symposium auction? Is there a middle initial there?

Then David Goldstein of Naples, FL adds this:
As you know, one of the items sold at the recent Symposium Auction was Steuben Glass Works stock certificate #7 that was signed by both Thomas G. Hawkes and Frederick Carder. Since I was aware of the question regarding Carder’s use of a middle initial, I carefully examined the signature on the certificate. It was signed Frederick Carder in his beautifully flowing script, without any middle initial.
