Silver Overlay

Dec 2, 2013
Issue 1871

Last Week’s Webmaster’s Selection
David Goldstein of Naples, Florida was excited to see his overlay vase featured:

It was good to see my old friend, the Red Overlay Vase in the Gazette. Seeing it and the comment “probably Alvin” got me to pull it out of its case and reexamine it to see if I could find any marks. I was again unsuccessful; no maker’s mark, no Sterling mark, not even a 999. The Vase is around 9″ tall, which is fairly large for a Carder Steuben Overlay piece.
.
The inscription is one of the nice features of this Vase. It has the dates 1883 an 1908 separated by a stylized “S”. I think it is safe to say that the Vase was a Silver Anniversary in 1908. Not too hard to date this piece.

This is our favorite Steuben Overlay piece and one of our top three overlay pieces.

Willson Craigie of Richmond, Virginia also was moved and wrote to David Goldstein:

I wish we were gathering in person next week…….the “touch” is so much better than the photo…. We have three-four overlay pieces we believe were made (glass) by Steuben but not sure. Susan and I are working diligently on our presentation during next years Symposium which we hope will be very informative and interesting on the subject
“When Carder Steuben Glass met Sterling Silver Overlay”.

David – Many of the marks are tiny…….. Most on vases are located on the very outside edge of the foot….. So often extremely difficult to locate. Take care of your old friend…… It’s a beauty!!
