Yesterday we asked for help on the www.cardersteubenclub.org web site section on signatures. Today, David Chadwick-Brown of San Diego adds this piece of information.
Alan,
Some additional comments on signatures. There seem to be two sizes of gold labels – the usual one is about 5/8ths of an inch on a side, though I also have a slightly smaller version at about half an inch on a side.
Also, there is an oval silver label with a script “Steuben” in black which is about 3/4ths of an inch in length.
When I first started collecting about 35 years ago, I was told that the depictions in Gardner’s book give a fleur-de-lis that purports to be “actual size,” but in fact is slightly larger than the real thing. The reason, it was said, was to trap forgers. Forgers would reproduce that “actual size” as the true image, but the discrepancy would immediately alert the collector that it was forged because slightly too large. Can anyone confirm if this is true?
